It is called the Istrian Y because it is shaped like the letter Y, with the two stretches both meeting at Kanfanar in south-central Istria.
Route A8 is complete. It is 64.4 km long, 5.4 km of which are the Učka Tunnel, currently one of the longest tunnels in Croatia. It is a carriageway, with a speed limit of 110 km/h.

Around 15 km are currently being built, running from Vodnjan to Pula and will be in operatin October 2006. After both Routes are finished the project of istrian Y will continue into Phase II.
