[edit] History
It was setup in 1963 along the same lines as the Indian Public School (IPS) system followed by the likes of The Doon School. It is one of the very first schools established in Rourkela and the very first to have English as the medium of instruction, which is also reflected in its name. Its official name is Ispat English Medium School, Sector-20 though it is also known as Ispat E.M. School. But it is famous by its nick name, 'Public School' because of it founding roots. However, admission to it has never been open to the general public. It is open to children of parents working for SAIL, CISF, CRPF and other Central Government undertakings and REC.
It is not a residential school. All students are day-scholars. The school is run by the Education department of the Steel Authority of India Limited or SAIL's Steel Plant at Rourkela.
The school is setup according to a house system. There are four houses named after famous indian personalities:
- Tagore (Rabindranath Tagore)
- Rajaji (C. Rajagopalachari)
- Pratap (Rana Pratap)
- Shivaji (Chhatrapati Shivaji)
The house colors are:
- Tagore - Red
- Rajaji - Yellow
- Pratap - Green
- Shivaji - Blue
A great deal of emphasis has always been put on academics.
[edit] Enrollment
It is a co-education school for all the grades.
Students are mostly enrolled to this school at 2 levels
Class 1 - through a general admission test.
Class XI - based on the marks obtained in their Class 10 exams.
Each class has 3 sections A,B and C with a maximum strength of 36 students each. Class 11 and 12 has two sections for science group that is section(A and B)and third section (C) for commerce. In science group there are 72 students each section and in commerce 36 students.
However only 35 students are enrolled into each section in class 1. The 2 remaining seats are kept aside for any emergency transfer from other SAIL steel plants during mid year.
Enrollment is strictly on the basis of merit. This has helped keep their reputation as one of the best schools in India.
Once enrolled the number of girls and boys in a section are randomly divided by 4 and are allocated to the 4 houses of the school.
In the traditional Indian way, girls are given more respect and awarded the first roll numbers in a class and the boys follow after that.
