[edit] I love wiki because it allows people to explore ideas

I believe that if there is dissent on a topic, then one should thoroughly peruse both sides of said topic. This is what makes for good (non-hostile) debates, and makes people far more persuasive in their opinions. I also know, that many of the scientists of the past have felt they had it right, and later it turned out to be different then had seemed obvious at the time (the world is flat, sickness is caused by humors, there is no such thing as invisble bugs that can make us sick... etc).

I, personally, don't want to make assumptions based on other peoples beliefs. I don't want to just take someone else's word for it. I want to be shown the evidence, perhaps have it explained to me, and work it out for myself. That is what makes a responsible scientist and human. A sense of curiosity, innovation, and open-mindedness, often creates profound growth and movement forward in any field. As a society we would be better off nurturing each other through our learning experiences, instead of fighting through them. As we explore possibilities for ourselves, and discard the ones that don't work, it instills in others a faith and trust in our process. It also helps other people open up to new ideas. Everyone is smart in some areas and not as knowledgeable others, but that doesn't mean that their questions or ideas won't be good ones. They might be really insightful because they are looking at it from outside the box. So no matter which side of the topic you are on please try to be confident in your questions, and kind with your explanations. If you are confident and comfortable with your understanding of the topic, they why not explore it with others? It isn't a matter of who ends up being right or wrong, really it is about thoroughly educating ourselves, and making choices we believe in. We don't all have to agree, but it would be nice if we all understood why we didn't:)
