[edit] About Islets of Hope
Islets of Hope was founded by Lahle Wolfe (a diabetic) when her 5-year-old daughter with type 1 diabetes went into diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) while unattended in a public school. She began IOH with the hope of educating schools, parents, and her community about diabetes and the needs of children and adults with diabetes. The IOH site received overwhelming positive response and quickly grew to become a "watch dog" organization willing to name schools failing to comply with protective state and federal law, rating diabetes products, flushing out "snake oil" companies, and helping frustrated parents find health care solutions for their family.
Wolfe has played a visible, and active role in the medical and professional communities for the past ten years as an advocate for women's health issues. She has been featured in "Woman's Day Magazine," "WebMD," and twice in the "Washington Post" for her advocacy work and for her own personal success story. (Lahle Wolfe lost more than 135 lbs. in order to take control of her diabetes, thyroid, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) health issues.)
Half of all profits from Islets of Hope are donated to IPump.org (Insulin Pumps for Underinsured Mellitus Patients), also founded by Lahle Wolfe, to help underwrite the cost of diabetes medical supplies and insulin pumps for underinsured persons with diabetes living in the U.S.
