Isle de Jean Charles
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Isle de Jean Charles is a narrow ridge of land between Bayou Terrebonne and Bayou Pointe-aux-Chene in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. It is home to many members of the Biloxi-Chitimacha tribe. The Indian population on Isle de Jean Charles today is approximately 230 persons in 60 homes.
It lies past the 72-mile Morganza levee system built by the Gulf of Mexico Hurricane Protection Project. Because of this reason, it is gradually disappearing into the Gulf of Mexico.
