Island Park Caldera

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Island Park Caldera is a large caldera located in eastern Idaho just to the southwest of the Yellowstone Caldera. The caldera is 18 miles long and 23 miles wide. To the southwest of the caldera lies the Snake River Plain. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River drains the area, dropping out of the caldera at Mesa Falls. The caldera is bounded by Big Bend Ridge on the south, by the Centennial Mountains and Henry's Lake Mountains on the North, by the Madison plateau on the east and by Thurburn Ridge on the west.

Harriman State Park is situated in the caldera. Snowmobiling, fishing, and nordic skiing are popular activities in the area. The peaks of the Grand Tetons are visible looking southeast from places in the caldera.
