Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan [1] was the name given to the nation of Afghanistan by the Taliban during their rule, from 1996 to 2001.
The Taliban never controlled the northeast of Afghanistan, controlled by the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan.
The local long form of the name was Dowlat-e Eslami-ye Afghanestan[1].

[edit] Renegade rule
The Islamic Emirate showed utter disrepect for international law once it came to power in 1996. For instance, it pulled Mohammad Najibullah, the former President of Afghanistan, out of the United Nations compound in Kabul and executed him summarily[2]. Furthermore, instead of making an alliance with neighbouring Islamic Republic of Iran, it murdered Iranian diplomats[2].
Only Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates ever recognized the Taliban government. Turkmenistan also de facto recognized the Taliban government, as it had official meetings and agreements with Taliban government ministers.
