Islam-aga's Mosque

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Islam-aga's Mosque is the only working mosque in Niš, Serbia (there is one mosque in Nis Fortress that is converted into gallery and another close to the University Rectorate, that was damaged in Anglo-American bombing of Nis, 1944). It was built in 1720 and reconstructed in 1870. Of the twenty mosques in Niš during Ottoman rule, its the only one that remains. It was torched during riots on March 17, 2004, that were reaction to riots of Kosovo Albanians who burned houses of ethnic Serbs there. Currently, the mosque is under reconstruction, funded by Serbian Government.
