[edit] interested in linguistic sounds?

If you are interested in phonetics or phonology, but dont know where to start, then have a look at these textbooks recommended by linguists, phoneticians, and teachers: User:ish ishwar/phonotextbooks

[edit] IPA

the IPA, for better or worse:

p b t d ʈ ɖ c ɟ k ɡ q ɢ   ʡ ʔ
m ɱ n ɳ ɲ ŋ ɴ
ʙ r ʀ   *
* * ɾ ɽ       *
  ɺ *
ɸ β f v θ ð s z ʃ ʒ ɕ ʑ ʂ ʐ ç ʝ x ɣ χ ʁ ħ ʕ ʜ ʢ h ɦ
ɬ ɮ * * *
β̞ ʋ ɹ ɻ j ɰ (ʁ) (ʕ) (ʢ)
l ɭ ʎ ʟ

[edit] what am i doing

  • make information about American languages more comprehensive, more accurate, & more up-to-date
    • language family pages
    • individual language pages
    • more about Athabaskan & Salishan
    • categorize languages with families & subfamilies
    • family relation proposals
    • web links
    • bibliographies
    • historical classification
    • sound inventories
    • maps
  • random linguistics improvement
  • Vietnamese phonology
  • Japanese phonology

(when i first encountered wikipedia, i saw that there was nothing on many things that i am interested in (such as the Klallam language). i thought it beneficial to make a small contribution (esp. since Klallam & related languages offer significant challenges to linguistic analysis). in many ways, my contributions are simply notes to myself that i display online. i know very little about South American languages. if i start to give them a merger representation here, then perhaps i learn a little myself. if others want to come with me (lead me?) on my journey into this unknown, you are very welcome. you can offer me suggestions, too. peace)
