[edit] İsdemir in brief

İsdemir was established on October 3, 1970 as Turkey's third state-owned steel works with Soviet Russian technology. It began production in 1975 with a capacity of 1.1 million tons per year of crude steel. The plant capacity was extended from 1984 onwards to 2.2 million tons/year. There are three blast furnaces with a total annual capacity of 2.450 million tons pig iron. The ongoing investment plan in amount of US$ 2.0 billion targets the production of flat steel with a capacity of 3.5 million tons per year when it is completed at the end of 2008.

The steel works is located on an area of approximately 8.6 km² around 17 km north of İskenderun. Today, slightly more than 6,000 people are employed by the company. The plant owns a sea port, which can receive and handle 9 cargo ships of 150,000 DWT at the same time.

The company, since 1998 in privatisation programme, was acquired by Erdemir on January 31, 2002 for US$50.0 million with the obligation to produce flat steel. Ataer Holding, a wholly owned subsidiary of the military pension fund OYAK, had purchased 49.29% of Erdemir’s shares on February 27, 2006 paying a total tender amount of US$2.96 billion in full in cash.
