[edit] History

The ISCTE was created in Lisbon by the decree Decreto-Lei nº 522/72, of 15th December 1972, as a first step towards a new and innovative public university in Lisbon. Due to the carnation revolution of 1974 this first faculty of a never completed larger projected university, stayed alone as a University Institute. Today is on the way to be renamed Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (University Institute of Lisbon), an intermediate step before becoming, if current plans maintain, the Universidade Metropolitana de Lisboa (Metropolitan University of Lisbon).

[edit] Research units

This institution is characterized by its high quality of research in its many research centers [1] (which publish important scientific journals of their respective fields in Portugal, some of them in English).
