Isaac Slade (born May 26, 1981 in Denver, Colorado) is the lead singer and pianist of alternative rock and piano rock band The Fray. He formed the band with childhood friend Joe King in 2002 after they bumped into each other at a local Guitar Center. He started singing when he was 8 years old, and started playing piano when he was 11 years old after temporarily losing his voice. Slade co-wrote all of the songs on The Fray's debut album How to Save a Life. Before forming The Fray, Isaac worked at Starbucks for several years.[citation needed] Despite considering himself (and the others considering themselves) to be of the Christian religion, The Fray insist that it is not a Christian band, as they do not want to limit themselves musically by defining themselves.[1].[citation needed]

[edit] Song meanings

The song "How to Save a Life" is based on Isaac Slade taking a crack-addicted teen at a summer camp under his wing. The song is about all of the people that tried to reach out to him but were unsuccessful and the friends he lost while he was addicted. As Slade says in an interview, the teen's friends and family approached him by saying, "Stop or I won't talk to you anymore," but all he needed was some support. Slade lists U2, Better Than Ezra, Counting Crows as his main influences.

The song "Over My Head (Cable Car)" was written about Isaac's brother Caleb (whose nickname is "Cable Car") who had been the first bassist for the band. Feeling Caleb was not helping them reach success, the band asked him to leave.[2] In the music video for the song, Isaac's youngest brother Micah was cast as a childhood version of Isaac.

Isaac Slade went to Faith Christian Academy with Joe King.
