[edit] Summary

After reading about a dead man named Leon Courbet, who died during the construction of Kadic, Sissi decides to hold a séance to communicate with him. She manages to convince Ulrich to attend. During the séance, one of XANA's ghosts appears in the form of a four-armed monster. At first, it seem docile, but quickly gets angry and attacks. Ulrich leaves Sissi with Odd while he goes to tell Jeremie. Jeremie can't find an activated Tower, which seems wrong considering the situation. As Jim patrols the hallways, he is picked up by an invisible object. Jeremie, Odd, and Ulrich arrive to spray it with a fire extinguisher, confirming that it's a ghost and implying that the Super Scan is broken. With the ghost on the loose, the group heads off to the Factory. After they arrive, Aelita, Odd, and Yumi head to Lyoko. Odd looks for the Tower while the other two head to Carthage to fix the Super Scan. Meanwhile, Jeremie and Ulrich are left to deal with the ghost.

[edit] Recap

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The episode starts out with Sissi reading an old city newspaper. An article in it details the unfortunate death of one Leon Courbet. In 1905, the man had apparently been part of the construction team for Kadic Junior High School. He was said to have been buried alive under the foundations during an accidental collapse. Nicolas seems to have known this all along and points out that fact to Hervé.

In math class, Mrs. Meyer is passing out graded tests. Among the various scores are 98, 93, 58, 50, and 10. Those scores belong to Jeremie, Hervé, Ulrich, Odd and Sissi, respectively. Mrs. Meyer also mentions a few details about their scores. Jeremie lost two points thanks to a ketchup stain, Odd got bonus points for originality, and Sissi got a low score because she ignored some of the questions. As the tests are passed out, Ulrich gets a note from Sissi. She wants him to meet her in the Boiler Room at midnight.

Later that night, Jim is in the Boy's Hall detailing how the boys and girls are to remain separate at night, because of safety concerns. After his tedious, boring, confusing and repetitve speech, everyone climbs into their beds and go to sleep. Ulrich gets up about thirty minutes before midnight (11:30 pm) and goes to meet Sissi at the desired locale—the boiler room where the construction worker, named Leon Courbet, was killed.

In the Boiler Room, Sissi has set up a pentagram with the help of Hervé and Nicolas. She intends to hold a séance to summon the departed spirit of Leon Courbet. As with everything she studies, she can't get any of the terms that apply to it right. Ulrich humors her as they begin their ceremony. After a short, incomprehensible chant from Hervé and Nicolas, Sissi calls on Leon. XANA answers the call by sending a ghost to greet them. This version of a Ghost has four arms, no legs, and one big mouth. It's basically something you'd see in a horror film. It appears docile at first, entertaining the children briefly. However, it quickly reveals its XANAfied nature and chases Hervé and Nicolas off almost instantly. Sissi and Ulrich stay a bit longer, but they're chased away, too. Ulrich blocks the door and drags Sissi away. The Ghost phases through the makeshift barrier easily.

In the Boys' Hall, Hervé and Nicolas are trying to tell Jim what they saw. They insist that it's true, and that they're scared! He doesn't believe them and gives them both detention for being out at this hour, when they should be in bed. Seeing Jim, Ulrich is forced to drag Sissi off in a different direction. She's still scared from seeing the Ghost and won't leave him alone. He takes her to his room and leaves her there—with Odd. He then heads off to warn Jeremie. Odd's a bit surprised by Sissi's sudden arrival, but handles it well. Jim is also patrolling the halls for any activity. The Ghost can be seen watching him, but it takes no action.

In Jeremie's room, Ulrich wakes him from his dreams and tells him about the Ghost. The Super Scan reveals nothing, which makes Ulrich believe it might actually be a ghost. Jim's scream makes the two run outside. He's suspended in the air with no visible source helping him. Odd and Sissi come out to see what's going on. Sissi's scream convinces the Ghost to let Jim go. It promptly grabs Odd instead. As Ulrich fights to pull Odd away, Jeremie grabs a fire extinguisher from a wall compartment and scares the Ghost away by spraying it with the white powder. It's quite clear that XANA made it. The three head off to get Aelita.

In Aelita's room, Jeremie wakes her from her dreams. The Ghost has reached the room directly below hers, and grabs Jeremie through the floor. Quick to action, Ulrich grabs a metric ruler and stabs the Ghost with it, scaring it off. They call Yumi and have her head to the Factory. The four then head off to the Park, with all but Ulrich still in their pajamas. Along the way, they hear the Ghost following them, but it never catches up.

At the Factory, Jeremie finds that the Super Scanner has been corrupted. He sends Aelita and Yumi to Carthage to repair it while Odd searches each of the other four Sectors for the activated Tower. Ulrich elects to stay so he can protect Jeremie.

On Lyoko, Yumi comments on seeing Odd in something other than pajamas. He's glad she notices, then starts to look around aimlessly. As he's about to ask for a Vehicle, Jeremie sends him the Overboard. As he leaves, Jeremie bring up the Transport Orb for the girls via Code: SCIPIO. The three-minute countdown starts as the two arrive in Carthage's Arena.

Back in the Lab, the Ghost appears to pursue Jeremie and Ulrich. They have no choice but to flee. The Ghost is unrelenting, and follows them everywhere around the Factory from the Machine Rooms to the Cathedral Hall.

In Carthage, Aelita and Yumi arrive in the Core Zone. The switch is seen on the other side of the blue geometrical chamber. When they reach the halfway point of the room, the floor begins to drop out. Soon, they're left in the middle of the room with no other platforms to go to. To add to the fun, four Creepers start scaling each side of the square-shaped platform. Aelita gets an idea and makes a platform for the two to ride on via her Creativity. Yumi uses her telekinesis to move it to the switch. Unfortunately, the timer runs out before they can fully activate it. They're forced to retreat to the Arena. On the way back, the Creepers manage to knock Yumi off of the platform. She uses the monsters as steps to get back on it.

Back in the main part of Lyoko, Odd hasn't had much luck finding the Tower. Searches of both the Desert Sector and the Forest Sector have proven fruitless. Now in the Glacial Sector, Odd sees a Tarantula. He follows it to the activated Tower. Once there, it begins to fire at him with its foreleg lasers. Odd manages to dodge most of its shots, but a lucky hit sets his tail on fire. It seems that Odd can actually feel the burning and tries to put it out. A second Tarantula arrives to join in on the fun.

In Carthage, Aelita and Yumi are trying to reach the Arena before the region closes up. The tall hallway connecting the Area to the Core Zone consists of numerous panels that close rapidly. Aelita makes it in time, but Yumi is crushed by the closing panels. Before she is devirtualized, only her arm can be seen "reaching" out through the solid wall. Aelita is now stuck in an enclosed space with no help inside or outside Lyoko.

In the Factory, the Ghost corners Jeremie. As it tries to choke him, Ulrich grabs two loose wires and electrocutes it. The attack scares it. That effect is only temporary, however. As the two near the elevator, it returns and grabs Jeremie. Ulrich tries to stop it, and is also picked up by the Ghost.

Back in the Glacial Sector, the Tarantulas get the better of Odd. He's devirtualized without so much as landing a hit. Once he gets back, he finds Yumi by one of the Scanners. She isn't used to the crushing, like he is, and can't move. He's forced to head to the Lab. At the computer, he contacts Aelita. She's been cornered by the Scyphozoa. Not having much experince with the machine, all Odd can do is turn on the news. Apparently a boxer has just won his fourth title match. Aelita directs him on how to bring up the Transport Orb. He does so, and it takes her away before the Scyphozoa can reach her. Odd sends her to the Tower and then heads off to find Jeremie.

In the Glacial Sector, Aelita arrives right next to the Tower. She's understandably angry that Odd had landed her in front of two Tarantulas. She runs at full speed, dodging lasers as she does. The Tarantulas may just have poor aim, as they end up missing her completely. One of the Tarantulas destroys its partner while doing so. It lets out an annoyed yell as Aelita enters the Tower.

Back in the Factory, Odd arrives to find the Ghost hanging on to Jeremie and Ulrich. He grabs a nearby metal rebar and stabs the ghost with it. It just grows anther arm and grabs him, too.

Aelita deactivates the Tower as it swings them about randomly. Because the Super Scanner was not repaired, they have to activate a return trip.

Back at the séance again, Ulrich humors Sissi during the ritual. After she finishes, a voice tells her to scram. Sissi and her cronies run away at the command. Odd was hiding behind the boiler the whole time and gets a good laugh out of it. As he and Ulrich leave, the door to the Boiler slams shut— seemingly on its own.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Memorable Quotes

Odd: Am I dreaming or what?
Sissi: I'm scared Odd. Mind if I sit near you?
Odd: Uh-huh. It's just a nightmare and soon I'm gonna wake up.
Yumi: Oh! Nice to see you without your pajamas on.
Odd: Hmm, nice of you to notice.
Odd: You okay guys? Say something.
Ulrich: Something.
Odd: Hey! No stealing my jokes, okay?
Jim: If I ever catch anyone going from downstairs upstairs or anyone going from upstairs to downstairs, he or she is really going to regret it stairs.

[edit] Trivia

[edit] Cinematic notes

  • Early in the episode, the Ghost was choking Jeremie in Aelita's room. Ulrich grabbed a ruler and stabbed the ghost, which caused it to disappear. Later when Odd stabbed it with a tube in the Factory, the ghost didn’t disappear, though this might be because the ghost had become stronger.
  • Jim said that the girls are upstairs and the boys are downstairs, but when Ulrich and Sissi were running to the dorms, Ulrich went upstairs to his room. Also, Sissi's room is besides Jeremie's, away from the other girls' dorms.
  • When in the Lab about to perform the trip back in time, Jeremie is back in his normal clothes instead of his pajamas.
  • When Odd is reaching for the earpiece, the next shot shows Jeremie’s hand grabbing it. You can see his blue sleeve.
  • After Odd's tail gets burnt and scorched brown by the Tarantula, in the next scene it's back to its normal white tip.
