Irwin Kostal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Irwin Kostal (October 1, 1911-November 23, 1994) is the Academy Award winning musical arranger of films including:
- West Side Story (one of several orchestrators under musical director Johnny Green),
- Mary Poppins
- The Sound of Music
- Half a Sixpence
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
- Bedknobs and Broomsticks
- Charlotte's Web
- The Blue Bird
- Pete's Dragon
- The Magic of Lassie
In 1982 Kostal was the conductor of the digital re-recording of the music to Walt Disney's 1940 animated feature Fantasia. Although he used Leopold Stokowski's original arrangements, many purists were upset about the change, and the studio re-instated the original Stokowski recordings in 1990.
In 1983 he wrote the musical score and theme song to the Oscar-nominated featurette Mickey's Christmas Carol.
He was made a posthumous Disney Legend in 2004.
