Irving Shain (b. 1926) was a Chemistry professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served as Chancellor of the university from 1977 to 1986. As Chancellor, he unilaterally revoked the collective bargaining rights of the first graduate employee union in the country, the Teaching Assistants' Association/AFT#3220. His unpopular policies were memorialized in such strike songs as "Shain's a Fool" to the classic tune "Chain of Fools." Despite his adamant union-busting efforts, graduate employees across the US and Canada now enjoy collective bargaining rights.
