Irving was often cast in the films directed by his brother Lloyd Bacon such as The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938). In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Irving played the recurring role of Mr. Crumb in Columbia Pictures's Blondie film series. In the 1950s, Bacon worked steadily in small roles, similar to his film work, in a number of sitcoms on television.
