Irenicism

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Irenicism is a concept rooted in the ideals of pacifism related to natural theology in an attempt to unify Christian apologetical systems by using reason as an essential attribute.

Those who have affiliated themselves with Irenicism identify the importance of unity in the Christian church, and declare the common bond between all Christians under Christ in orthodox Christianity. Famous figures who subscribed to this idea include Desiderius Erasmus, the famous 16th century Dutch Christian Humanist. Erasmus had promoted not only the basic concepts of the Reformation (in the sense of checking clerical abuses, honoring inner piety, considering Reason as a meaningful concept, etc.) but also promoted the notion that to remain as a true and powerful religion, Christianity must remain under one church, both theologically and literally; under the body of the Roman Catholic Church.
