Irayimman Thambi was a great poet and musician of Kerala (India). His name and his ever living song "Omana thinkal" is recognizable to the 30 million or so Malayalees.Having been a court poet to one of Kerala's important kings, I would say he has not just literary importance but historic importance as well. I was dismayed to see that the wikipedia article about Thambi was sited as lacking "importance"! Here is an external link to an excellent article about Irayimman Thambi
