Ira Mellman

Ira Mellman, Ph.D. is currently Sterling Professor of Cell Biology & Immunobiology at Yale University. He is the Chair of the Cell Biology Department and a member of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. Ira Mellman is also the editor in chief of the Journal of Cell Biology and plays bass in his own rock band called "The Cellmates"

[edit] Early Life and Studies

Mellman is originally from New York, where he lived until he began at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. While in college he studied a great variety of subjects, maintaining an interest in music. He ultimately took on the study of cells and cell biology as a career. Over the next few years, Mellman participated in several biological studies, including research on cell wall proteins, endocytosis, polarized cells, and immune cells.

[edit] Move to Yale and Later Years

After leaving Oberlin, he chose UC Berkeley for his graduate studies, eventually transferring to Yale University. He ultimately returned to Yale, to teach and research, and has remained there for over twenty years. In 1977, he married his wife, Margaret Moench, with whom he has three children. Mellman has served on the council of the American Society for Cell Biology, as well as chairman of the Yale Department of Cell Biology and Scientific Director of the Yale Cancer Center. He currently lives in Guilford, Connecticut.
