IPv6 internet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IPv6 internet is a specific wide area network that uses IPv6 as its network layer protocol. It is the IPv6 equivalent to the IPv4 internet, which it is intended to replace once the internet's transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is complete.

[edit] Connecting to the IPv6 internet

Ideally, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) would provide direct connectivity to the IPv6 internet just as they do for the IPv4 internet. This would mean that one could send and receive IPv6 packets directly via the underlying link layer protocol (e.g. PPP or Ethernet).

In reality, most ISPs don't provide this service today. As a temporary solution, there are systems like 6to4 which allow you to use the existing IPv4 internet as the link layer protocol and connect to the IPv6 internet over that.
