Ionomycin is an ionophore that comes from Streptomyces conglobatus. It is used in research to raise the intracellular level of Ca2+, in research on Ca2+ transport across biological membranes. Ionomycin is used in clinical research to stimulate the intracellular production of interferon, perforin, IL-2, and IL-4. These chemicals are important in the inflammatory response. These chemicals are produced by CD28- T-cells.
Commercially, Ionomycin can be obtained as a free acid, or as a Ca2+ salt.
