Inverness Highland Games

The Inverness Highland Games (official name: City of Inverness Highland Games), is a Highland games event in the city of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The modern Games at Inverness had their origin in 1821. That year, the Inverness Courier reported that fundraising was taking place in the town by members of the Northern Meeting Society in order to revive the ancient traditions and to bring a Highland games event to the capital of the Highlands.

The Games are organised by the Highland Council and at present normally take place on the third weekend of July in a specially constructed arena in Bught Park on the banks of the River Ness.
While the heavy events at Inverness remain the highlight of the weekend, the Inverness Games are a celebration of all aspects of Highland culture. The Games are host to an inter-clan gathering, a Highland dancing competition, a full programme of track and field events, solo piping competitions and, in 2005, pipe band and drum major competitions were added to the programme. Music plays a major part in the event and the traditional music tent at the Games attract musicians from all over the Highlands.
