Inuktitut Wikipedia edition of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Inuktitut Wikipedia was created in 2005 under the ":iu" domain. It currently has 156 articles, making it the 175th largest Wikipedia by article count, not including talk pages, redirect pages, etc. There is currently one native speaker, several sysops, many admins, and over 100 registered users. There is currently a proposal to shut it down, but this has not been fruitful as it has met overwhelming opposition although the discussion has not been halted as of yet, but the warning was removed from the Inuktitut main page on Feb 24 2007.

On February 24ht 2007 the main page went under a drastic change to a new format not featuring categories, but simply grouping the best articles into groups with direct links to articles.

It is one of the fastest growing Wikipedias it has gone from 195th place in January 2007 to 175th place on February 25th 2007, in the same period the article count has gone from about 70 stubs that were barely in Inuktitut to 156 articles in all Inuktitut, a growth a over 122%! This has been greatly helped by one consistent native speaker editor who came to the wiki in January 2007, and some other editors that have added some significant bulk to select articles recently. The community of non-Inuktitut speaking editors is currently lobbying for more native speakers to enter the project, with some success.

The Inuktitut language is written in both Canadian Syyabics and a limited Roman Alphabet, most articles now are written entirely and exactly in both. All Article titles are written in both with syllabics first and then Roman separated by a slash, this slash has caused begun to cause some troubles due to the fact that it creates subpages.
