Talk:Interweb

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'd like to be able to list the first use, but I don't think it's going to be easy. I've listed the first use I know of, but maybe there's an earlier one. --G Gordon Worley III 20:03, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I think there was an earlier use than the one described in this article. Cant quite remember myself but I think I saw somebody use this term on the intarweb. -- 82.3.32.75 18:00, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It's been used far earlier than 2001. The alt.religion.kibology group, for instance, was using it when I first started reading the group in late 1999. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a kibism; it sounds like his kind of humor.

It's probably important to note that it tends to denote a sort of irony toward people who think the Internet and the Web are the same thing. Thus, its origins in a newsgroup or other non-Web region of the Internet seems pretty likely.

Its probably also worth noting that I first came across this term as a form of derision aimed at geeks. The "uneducated masses" can do irony as well you know! Monkey Tennis 03:15, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

It seems to have grown in popularity tremendously since the venture brothers episode “Are You There God? It’s Me, Dean."

Anybody want to figure out how early it was used on Something Awful? I would almost guarantee it's 2000 or before, either in Jeff K or Cliff Yablonski. 130.85.102.101 20:44, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dictionary entry!

This should be an entry in Wiktionary and not an encyclopedia article. The word 'interweb' is in no sense encyclopedic. I would set up a campaign to get it deleted & transwiki'd but I don't really know how. ZephyrAnycon 18:35, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Agreed. Would a member of the set not tagged "uneducated masses" please help ZephyrAnycon and me? Monkey Tennis 03:15, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
Disagree. I came for the information contained here, I knew the "dictionary" definition already ("tongue-in-cheek reference to the Internet")
Disagree as well - even though it's a specific term, there is an important cultural history involved beyond its definition or etymology, which warrants the entry. Mabuse 14:06, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Typo?

I was wondering if "the" was diliberately misspelled to emphasize the joke in the sentence: "You broke teh Interweb". It seems like a typo without a context wrapper (i.e., "when typed").

It is intended. Further, I am adding intraweb, because I have seen it frequently used. If you object, then reluctantly delete it.

(The "teh" is not a typo. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teh)

[edit] Early use

Not in quite the sense people use it now, but here's one from the rec.arts.anime Usenet group, posted on 8 March 1995: [1] Loganberry (Talk) 17:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] another use

I'm pretty sure they said it on Venture Bros, that testicular torsion one.

[edit] Babylon 5

I always thought the term originated from the show Babylon 5? They used it in season 1 (which aired in 1994) as the name of their internet. --Herman 02:29, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

It definitely appeared in Babylon 5, episode " Eyes", first aired in the U.S. July 13th, 1994. Info from the Babylon 5 Encyclopedia and the Lurker's Guide to B5. A search of newsgroups via google shows the only prior use of "interweb" was here, in someone's resume, predating the airing of the episode by 6 days... --Doconeill 19:23, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Explanation of first uses

Just thought I'd ask if we could get a better explanation of how 'interweb' was used in the game "Fallout". I'm totally lost on how it was used, etc. --216.201.62.151 22:36, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
