Talk:Interracial friendships

- I think this should be deleted, since 1) it reads like a paper, and 2) despite the fact it looks like a paper it looks incredibly POV. Either way it needs a lot of work. --ColourBurst 01:27, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

- Interracial friendships ought to be trashed, promptly. Since it "goes nowhere" (i. e., is wan and vague), it should be removed, promptly. Superslum 11:24, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

- The reason it "reads like a paper" is because it is full of citations. Although the sources of the citations might have POV, this does not tarnish the quality of the article. Wikipedia's policy on NPOV requires multiple POVs to be given equal weight if there is more than one POV. If User:ColourBurst thinks the POV of the citations is not the only POV on the subject, he/she should cite a different POV.--Dark Tichondrias 21:27, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- This page should certainly not be deleted, as it is the unique focus of research in psychology and sociology (e.g., work by Miles Hewstone [1] from Oxford University and Maureen Hallinan [2] from Notre Dame University). A recently published meta-analysis by Tom Pettigrew and Linda Tropp (Pettigrew & Tropp, 2006) found that intergroup friendship is a particularly powerful form of intergroup contact for reducing prejudice, even among groups with high levels of violent conflict (e.g., Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland; Paolini, Hewstone, Cairns, & Voci, 2004). There is a growing knowledge base on the topic of intergroup friendships, as it is the subject of ongoing psychophysiological and social cognitive research currently being conducted at the University of California Berkeley, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Oxford University, Simon Fraser University, University of Vermont, and State University of New York Stony Brook. Therefore the topic of this page is a distinct concept that is not adequately covered by other existing wikipedia articles. I will return at a later date to add research findings on the topic of interracial friendships to this article. If this page were to be deleted, it should only be for the purpose of retitling it Intergroup Friendship, as interracial friendships fall under this more general classification.
- Furthermore, it is inaccurate to have this page simply redirect to the Miscegenation page, as interracial friendships are not typically considered miscegenation, a term typically used to refer to the mixing of "blood" or DNA from different ethnicities through procreation. For example, there have never been official anti-miscegenation laws in the United States forbidding friendships between people from different racial groups, even though social norms and many other contextual factors have informally restricted interracial friendships in the past and present. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by LizPage-Gould (talk • contribs) 07:26, 21 October 2006.
- No other article page in Wikipedia connects to this page. That alone suggests AfD. If this is a genuinely notable topic, then it's inconceivable that no other page would connect to it. At the very least, it should be renamed "Intergroup friendships". CaughtLBW 20:17, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
