The women's race certainly goes back well before 2000, but the results are hard to find (on the Web, anyway). I found these:

1994 Brooke Blackwelder 1997 Dede Demet 1998 Kendra Wenzel 1999 Anke Erlank

A bit more searching turned up these:

1995 Phyllis Hines 1996 Linda Jackson

There's a (brief) race report from 1993 but no winner mentioned.

Added a few countries and teams, and a link to Dede Demet-Barry's article.

Does anyone know about posting pictures and (presumably) getting permission to post pictures from other websites? This one

would be perfect for this article: Bessette and Jeanson climbing Blue Knob mountain in 2003.

OK, I found some 1994 and earlier results on Altoona Mirror microfilm. There was a 1994 special insert section which included a history of the race. It implied that it began in 1987. Where does the 1985 starting date come from?

OK, I got email from the race organizer, who has been there "since the beginning," that the 1985 and 1986 races were not USCF-sanctioned, and were not called 'Tour de Toona," and that 1987 is considered the official beginning of the Tour de Toona. The 2006 race will be celebrated as the 20th race. So I've changed things to reflect that.
