Interstate 605 (abbreviated I-605), locally called the San Gabriel River Freeway or The 605, is a major north-south freeway of about 27 miles (43 km) in length located entirely within Southern California, USA. Unlike most other freeways in Southern California which are named after a particular city along its route, this freeway derives its name from the San Gabriel River that it parallels for most of its alignment.

[edit] Route description
The north terminus of the freeway is at the junction with the Foothill Freeway, (I-210) in Duarte, California, a small city located at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The alignment of the freeway is generally south-southwest and passes through the San Gabriel Valley, shifting straight south as it crosses the Whittier Narrows into the Los Angeles Basin. After traveling through the Gateway Cities region of southeastern Los Angeles County, it crosses Coyote Creek into Orange County, where it terminates at the junction of the San Diego (I-405) and Garden Grove (CA/SR-22) Freeways in Seal Beach, at the Orange/Los Angeles County line.
The 605 follows most of the length of the San Gabriel River, beginning at the Santa Fe Dam and ending at I-405 near Seal Beach. Typically dry riverbed and flood basins are visible from many portions of the route, especially near the northern terminus.
Throughout most of the route, the 605 features an HOV lane for carpools of two or more people.
[edit] History
Interstate 605 was approved as a chargeable interstate in 1962. Originally it was planned as I-13 running from Interstate 5 to Interstate 15. It began construction in 1964, and the first section from Interstate 405 to Interstate 10 was opened in 1968. The final section north extension to Interstate 210 was opened in 1971.
[edit] Control cities
Signs along the 605's entrances and freeway junctions do not include destinations (control cities) such as "Seal Beach" or "Irwindale", but simply read "NORTH" or "SOUTH" — a rarity in Southern California. In place of control cities, a simple "THRU TRAFFIC" designation is used.
