International Year of Forests

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Recognizing the integral role of forests in global sustainable development, the United Nations General Assembly [1] adopted resolution 61/193 on 20 December 2006 declaring the year 2011 as the International Year of Forests.

Activities for the International Year will focus on fostering knowledge exchange on practical strategies to promote sustainable forest management.

The Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests [2], will serve as the focal point for implementation of the International Year in collaboration with Governments, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests [3]and relevant international, regional and subregional organizations and processes.

The resolution also invites the Food and Agriculture Organization [4], as the Chair of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests to support the implementation of the International Year of Forests.

To facilitate organization of activities in support of the Internation Year of Forests, Governments, regional and international organizations and civil society organizations are expected to create national committees and designate focal points in their respective countries.
