The International Journal of Educational Technology was sponsored jointly by the University of Western Australia and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The journal was published twice-yearly, in online form only. The journal was open access, requiring neither subscription nor registration. All previous issues remain accessible online.

The International Journal of Educational Technology was first published in July 1999. Only one issue was published in 2002, and by December 2005, there had been no further issues.
