International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO)

The Islamic Relief Organization is a charity based in Saudi Arabia that the United States has associated with terrorism.
During his Combatant Status Review Tribunal Mustafa Ahmed Hamlily was asked to defend working for the IRO.[1]
Mahmoud Jaballah, an Egyptian detained in Canada on a security certificate, acknowledged working as a school teacher for the IIRO in Pakistan, from 1991 to 1994.[2]
The factors favoring the continued detention of Guantanamo detainee Mammar Ameur presented to his Administrative Review Board hearing included:[3]
- The detainee is associated with Abu Qua'il, a former leader of the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) and the information section within the NGO Muslim World League.
- The IIRO is an Islamic NGO with ties to extremist activities.
Activities
- In 2005, IIRO provided a number of relief packages for 2004 tsunami and earthquake victims in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand
- IIRO also provided assistance to the victims of 2005 earthquake in the affected areas and regions of Pakistan which were virtually isolated and inaccessible[4]
