International Institute for Management Development
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The International Institute for Management Development, or IMD, is a small and elite business school with a campus in Lausanne, Switzerland. IMD was established in January 1990, as the successor to two previously independent business schools: IMI, founded in Geneva by Alcan in 1946, and IMEDE, founded in Lausanne in 1957 by Nestlé. The faculty consists of 60 full-time members, made up of 22 different nationalities. The current President is Peter Lorange. IMD is not part of an university. The professors do not have a lifelong tenure but a performance based pay package.
IMD is considered one of the top graduate business schools in the world and is competing with INSEAD, IESE and London Business School for the top spot in Europe. IMD differs from other business schools because it selects mature and experienced candidates for both the MBA and the EMBA and for having a strong focus on training and developing general management skills.
Like many top business schools today, IMD is eager in getting a very diverse and international group of participants. It consciously doesn´t set up auxiliary branches in other countries or continents, but wants to bring a balanced group of diverse nationalities together on its campus in Switzerland to stimulate cross-cultural interaction. The majority of the participants come from Continental Europe, Middle East and Asia, which differs from the high degree of particpants with an Anglo Saxon background attending well renowned US institutes. This doesn´t imply that there is a bias to a non Anglo Saxon corporate culture. In tradition with its Swiss orgins, IMD is open minded and non political and teaches best practices and ideas that originated from all over the world. Business cases concerning US firms are well represented in the curriculum.
IMD has two main educational offerings:
- Degree programmes, MBA and EMBA program
- Executive education, including a lot of customized courses for corporations
-
- MBA program
The school's MBA program is a one-year program that offers the full curriculum commonly offered by 2-year MBA programs. The program runs January through December, with a short summer break. Classes are held 6 days per week, with one full weekend off each month. The school typically admits approximately 80 students, and each class includes participants from many countries.
The MBA program focuses strongly on general management, and as a result 70% of the graduates typically get recruited within the industry sector (regular recruiters are Shell, Philips, Nestlé, Unilever, Novartis), vs. with investment banks and consulting firms. The curriculum is designed to focus on real business experience through teaching predominantly business cases (instead of academic theory).

- EMBA program
IMD doesn´t make a distinction between an EMBA or a Global EMBA. It offers one Global program. The 70 selected candidates typically have broad international business experience. They stay on campus in Lausanne for certain periods, visit Silicon Valley, Shanghai, Ireland and Romania and do in-company assignments. The average age of the participants is 39. The first two modules basically consist of one of IMD flagship programmes called Program for Executive Development (PED). Companies that frequently send their employees to the EMBA program are Shell, Maersk , Novartis, Nokia and UBS.
