International Daily News

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

International Daily News (Chinese: 國際日報; pinyin: guójì rìbào) is a Taiwanese-owned major Chinese-language newspaper in North America and Indonesia. Launched in 1981 in the city of Monterey Park, California, it takes an editorial position more favorable to the Pan-Green Coalition, in contrast to its competitor the World Journal, which takes an editorial position more favorable to the Pan-Blue Coalition. It is sold in several major Chinatowns.

Although more favorable to the Pan-Green Coalition, this is mostly regarding the Taiwanese politics, and at the same time, it still maintained the relative neutrality toward mainland China. In fact, in comparison to its competitor World Journal, International Dauly News was much more popular among mainland Chinese immigrants in North America due to its much less hostile attitude toward mainland China/Chinese until the mid-/late- 1990's, when World Journal significantly changed its hostile attitude toward mainland China/Chinese. The owner/publisher of International Daily News was jailed by the Taiwanese government under the Kuomintang regime in the late-1980's and early 1990's during her visit to Taiwan, under the charge of making propaganda for the communist, because she used the simplified Chinese characters mainland China adopted, and this was the major reason for its switching support from the Kuomintang to the Pan-Green Coalition.
