Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry

The Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, School of Optometry is an optometry school of the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico located in Hato Rey, San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was founded in 1981 and in 1992 became a separate autonomous academic unit within the university. The Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association accredits the school. Accreditation is valid for periods of eight (8) years.

The bilingual nature of the School of Optometry places this optometry program in a unique educational position. Most lectures and clinical care are in Spanish, while the texts, tests, and patient records are in English. Its student body represents more than 12 states and countries of the world creating an international multiethnic environment. Students are able to practice in hospitals and external clinical rotations throughout the world.

The first year of the program consists of basic science class of Neuro Anatomy, Physiology, Optics, Parm. The course load is geared toward getting the highest passing rates for their students on the NBEO.

Many students come to this school to experience the wide variety of different ocular diseases that are found in the many eye clinics set up around the island.

The school is very unique their own way, have class sizes around 50 students it allows for a better experience for the student's interaction with their profesor's. The culture back round varies from the Puerto Rico, Florida, California, Canada, Mid-West, a very few from the Northeast US. Going to this school provides one of the highest educations in the field of Optometry. Giving their students the opportunity with hands-on care early in the first year.
