Intel vPro
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intel vPro is a platform marketing initiative similar to that of Centrino and Viiv. It is targeted at business customers. vPro will come with dual-core technology as well as supporting 64-bit applications. Also included is a networking chipset and extensive features for remote management of PCs and built-in virtualization technology.
The platform provides support for software and hardware inventory management, the ability to cut off OS-level network access remotely, remote diagnostics, and remote file access, using a form of out of band communication branded Intel Active Management Technology. This allows the computer to respond irrespective of OS state through leveraging the interconnects between the firmware and the network controller. Other key selling points are brought by the required use of the Core 2 Duo processor, namely virtualization, 64-bit capability, and support for the XD bit.
Software vendors such as Altiris, LANDesk, and Microsoft (SMS) are creating management tools that take advantage of vPro's AMT technology.
