Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3 or IMMM) was officially recognised by the UK's Privy Council on 26 June 2002. Created from the merger of The Institute of Materials (IOM) and The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM), the Institute intends to develop to be the leading international professional body for the advancement of materials, minerals and mining to governments, industry, academia, the public and the professions.

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy.

Our Mining objectives include:

  • To promote the interest of Mining Technology within the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining
  • To represent the interests of members in all the fields of mining technology
  • To promote and co-ordinate transfer of information within the Division by means of National Conferences, Local Conferences/Seminars, Materials World and the IMM Website
  • To provide a link between the local societies having Mining Technology interests(both Home and Overseas) and the Council of the Institute
  • To forge links with other organisations whose interest is directly or indirectly connected with mining technology to promote the object of the Institute
  • To recommend to the Industry and Technology Policy Board, and the Awards Committee, nominations for relevant Institute Awards
  • To promote Mining Technology both at home and overseas
  • To maintain contacts with Academia and Industry to ensure that the needs of both are appropriately addressed by the Institute

To promote the professional interests of Mineral Processing & Extractive Metallurgy (MP&EM) members within the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and worldwide. This will be achieved by:-

  • working closely with the other minerals-related Divisions to ensure visibility of the Minerals Industry within the Institute;
  • promoting and co-ordinating transfer of information within the Division by means of national and international conferences, local conferences and seminars, Materials World, the IMMM Website and the Mining and Minerals Library;
  • providing a link between the local societies having MP&EM interests (both home and overseas) and the Council of the Institute;
  • forging links with other organisations whose interests are directly or indirectly connected with MP&EM to promote the objectives of the Institute and the interests of the members of the Division;
  • promoting the visibility and prestige of the minerals engineering profession by recommending to the Industry and Technology Policy Board, and the Awards Committee, nominations for relevant Institute Awards;
  • promoting the interests of members of the Division and of the MP&EM industry as a whole both at home and overseas;
  • maintaining contacts with academia and industry to ensure that the needs of both are appropriately addressed by the Institute;

The Instutute produces several magazine titles, Materials World, The packaging Professional and Clay Technology. The titles are available to members or by subscription.
