The Institute of Administrative Management is a professional membership body for Administrative Managers (whether practicing or aspiring to achieve via study and experience) with students and members in 65 countries world-wide.[1]

The IAM was formed[2] in 1915 when a group of executives from the private and public sector met at the London School of Economics. With the intentions of forming a self-development group with the aim and intention of shared best practice in administrative management..[3]

  • 1915 Foundation of the personal development meeting at the LSE
  • 1916 Office Machinery Users Association (OMA) set up
  • 1932 The Office Management Association formed during the First National Conference on Office Management.
  • 1933 First OMA Survey of Office Practices & Salaries published
  • 1936 Name of the OMA changed to The Institute of Office Management
  • 1942 The IOM in conjunction with the LSE publishes the First Clerical Salaries analysis.
  • 1946 The IOM in conjunction with Regent Street Polytechnic, London launches examination scheme.
  • 1948 The first members Journal is launched
  • 1971 The IOM initiates the Office of the Year Award
  • 1972 THE IOM changes its name to The Institute of Administrative Management
  • 1976 Office Job Evaluation Handbook published
  • 1994 The IAM launches its Continuing Professional Development Scheme for members, the scheme has it roots in the very first meeting in 1915.
  • 1995 Eightieth Anniversary
  • 2002 The IAM forms a Strategic Alliance with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators
  • 2003 The IAM launches the BA (Hons) in Strategic Administrative Management.
  • 2004 followed by the launch of the new Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Strategic Administrative Degree awarded by Oxford Brookes University.

The IAM operates a number of branches across the UK providing members with networking opportunities as well as operating its own qualification scheme which is linked to national standards.[4]
