Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Bird is the head police inspector in the British town of Iping. One of his men, Constable Jaffers, claimed to have been confronted with an invisible assailant in the Lion's Head Inn. Skeptical, Bird went personally to the Lion's Head and interviewed all of the patrons and townspeople who claimed to have encountered the unseen criminal.

When none of them — including Jaffers — could produce a shred of evidence, Bird declared it all a hoax. He was quickly proven wrong, however, when the Invisible Man made his presence at the meeting known, first throwing a bottle of ink into the astonished inspector's face, then strangling him and finally killing him by bashing him over the head with a barstool.
