Insar (Russian: Инса́р) is a town in the Republic of Mordovia, Russia. It is located 77 km south-west of Saransk at the confluence of the Issa and Insarka Rivers at . Population: 8,951 (2002 Census); 9,275 (1989 Census).
Founded in 1648 as a fortress and a posad. Town status granted in 1780, demoted to a rural settlement in 1926. Town status granted again in 1958.
