I just want to open up a discussion. Can/should this template be used for Scottish islands? Would it be better to set up a new one with a similar structure (as, for example, it may be useful to have ferry routes included with islands and there seems to be a need to include language - ie, English 'and' Gaidhlig or English or Gaidhlig)? It already exists. See Template:Infobox Scottish island. It does not include ferry routes, but it is easy enough to add this in. So far I have mostly used it on unihabited islands. Its main use as I see it is for the hundreds of smaller islands where there is no purpose in repeating the rather obvious information about the Council area/Parlimanetry constituency, Lieutenancy areas etc. being 'Western Isles' over and over again and it includes fields for area, elevation etc. instead, with just one Admin sub-division for Council area. Example at e.g Staffa. There are only a few in use so far but as I wander about the islands I am slowly including them when I get the article up to scratch. The only Infobox Scotland place I've come across so far in this context is St Kilda which has lots of useless information about postcodes and parliamentary constituencies on it (useless as is there is no postal service and no voters). - How about not merging? Who would it actually benefit? There is a good argument to be made that the Scottish one is not versatile enough for all possibilities, and it could be better to split. Cities, regions, areas, towns, villages, islands etc are all quite different. So, why on Earth unite with the rest of the UK? - Given the increased possibilities that are made available through #if and #switch functions, it is possible in incorporate all aspects of the Scotland place infobox into a general infobox that is suitable for anywhere in the UK. By standardising the format, core changes/updates to be made with a single edit rather than having to edit 4 separate infoboxes, while small changes can still be made just as easily as before. - That is interesting. The one biggie I'm after including is language, as it would easily solve an edit war on one article in particular to list two main languages for the island and then include their influences in the body. - Not quite what I meant, but I do agree that Cornish is a good idea. For example, in the Isle of Lewis, we speak English and Gaidhlig, but in Aberdeen no Gaidhlig as a rule (and for a purist, English is debatable ;-) ), so it would be good to have a field to identify what language(s) and/or dialects (Doric etc) are commonly spoken in the place without casting any value judgement on how important they are. It would be wise to have it as an optional field as in most places in the UK, the language is just straight-forward English. MRM 20:00, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

- Flags were removed because of the Northern Ireland flag dispute that comes up regularly. They could be added back in. See Template talk:Infobox UK place. Regan123 18:00, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
The comment by Morrismaciver is nonsense, clearly it would be inappropriate to merge into an EU or world infobox. The reason for this is the differences between settlements in those areas. Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England, all part the United Kingdom, have many similarites. As such, the argument that the next step could be to create a standard EU or UK infobox doesn't hold.
It makes sense to use a common infobox. This helps to ensure consistency which is good for readers and good for editors. Adambro 11:16, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
