[edit] Usage

This infobox is intended to be used on all the "Country at the year Olympics" pages.

Currently, these pages almost always have a flag of the country (of different sizes), a small medal table (in various formats), and some have a navigation box at the bottom of the page to move to similar pages for that country for other years. Most of the current pages also have an introductory paragraph that mentions the IOC country code, and usually some description of how many appearances the nation has made at the Games.

The intent of this infobox is to use a consistent style for all of this information, in a common location on the page, in an easy to read format, and using a template to make the information easy to maintain.

[edit] Additional link

Is it practical to get this template to link to "Country at the Season Olympics" when such an article exists? Thanks, Andjam 10:31, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, that was on my "to do" list. During the past two weeks or so as I've been using this template (~1400 pages edited so far...) I've been thinking about what to do with the main "Nation at the Season Olympics" pages. The current state of that set of articles is very sorry indeed! There are literally 5-6 reasonable articles out of the ~300 that need to be written. Most of them are in a serious state of neglect! Most nations have a summary of the 1896 and/or 1900 Games and that's it. I would prefer to see these articles show at a minimum: medal count at each Games, medal count by sport (to show where they are strongest, etc.), and list of medalists if not a big list (e.g. Ireland at the Summer Olympics. There are 90 nations that have won less than 50 medals in all Games). Anything else (like the excellent discussion on Australia at the Winter Olympics) is gravy, but not mandatory or expected at present. I had been thinking of tackling them after I've finished all the nation pages (in about 3 weeks, at my current editing rate, I would guess).
I had been thinking that we ought to use a single "Nation at the Olympics" page for most nations, and only create separate Summer/Winter pages where necessary, or where we have sufficient content. I don't like the idea of a parallel set of "root" pages, especially when only about 10% (estimate) of nations really need a distinct Winter page. I was going to propose something like that to Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports Olympics, but that seems like a dead project these days. Andrwsc 16:24, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
I've added the links to the current pages — if they exist. I think this is a good solution for now, since it avoids redlinks in the infobox for most nations. I still want to address the big issue of how to handle the main articles. Andrwsc 17:06, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Merging for most cases sounds sensible. Mentioning the season for "Nation at the 1936 Olympics" is useful, because otherwise you'd be describing two events on the same page, but "Nation at the Olympics" is already going to be a collection of several events. Andjam 11:37, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
