Information Leakage Detection and Prevention

Information Leakage Detection and Prevention (ILD&P or ILDP) is a computer security term referring to systems designed to detect and prevent the unauthorized transmission of information from the computer systems of an organization to outsiders. Also referred to by various vendors as Data Loss Prevention (DLP) by analogy to conventional loss prevention, Information Leak Prevention (ILP), Content Monitoring and Filtering (CMF) or Extrusion Prevention System by analogy to Intrusion-prevention system.
The term Information Leakage Detection and Prevention was coined by IDC.

[edit] Types of ILD&P Systems
[edit] Network ILD&P
Also referred to as Gateway-based systems. These are dedicated hardware/software plaforms typically installed on the organization's internet network connection and analyze network traffic to search for unauthorized information transmissions.
[edit] Host Based ILD&P systems
Such systems run on end-user workstations in the organization. They have the advantage that they can monitor and control access to physical devices and access information before it has been encrypted. They can also provide more fine-grained information such as the application attempting to access or transmit the information. They have the disadvantage that they need to be installed on every workstation/server in the network.
