Inflanty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Inflanty was the remainder of the Duchy of Livonia, that was kept Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the Treaty of Oliva in 1660.
The name Inflanty itself comes from German name of Livonia - Livland, later transformed into polish naming style.
Livonia had been part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1561, after Livonian Brothers of the Sword were secularized in Union of Wilno.
Most of Inflanty was conquered by Sweden in 1620s, in the course of the Polish-Swedish Wars, and conquest of the majority was completed by 1629. Under Swedish rule of the country became known as Swedish Livonia (Polish: Inflanty Szwedzkie), which was formally recognised in Treaty of Oliva, 1660. The remaining part of Inflanty in the Commonwealth was also informally known as Polish Livonia (Polish: Inflanty Polskie) and was roughly equivalent to today's Latgale.
