Evolution (1979) |
Journey's fourth album, Infinity, was released in May of 1978 on the Columbia Records label.
Looking for a stronger lead vocalist, Journey enlisted front man Robert Fleischman for a short period of time and even recorded one track, "For You", which never appeared on any Journey studio album, though it did finally make an appearance on the "Time3" collection. His tenure in the band was short-lived, as he was replaced by Steve Perry.
Perry and Neal Schon quickly penned their first song together, "Patiently", which would appear on the new studio album. Perry added his signature vocals to now classic tracks like "Lights" and "Wheel in the Sky." "Wheel" was actually penned by short-time front man Robert Fleischman and remains a popular song on classic rock stations.
In another smart move by manager Herbie Herbert, he enlisted famous producer Roy Thomas Baker to engineer Journey's sound on this album. The results are evident as a layered sound approach, similar to his work with Queen, is seen on tracks such as the hidden gem "Winds of March".
The addition of Perry solidified their more mainstream sound and helped Journey attain their highest chart success to date. This album also marked the last appearance of drummer Aynsley Dunbar as a member of the band.
Highest chart position: #21

[edit] Lyrics
Lights
[Chorus:]
When the lights go down in the City
And the sun shines on the bay
I want to be there in my City
Ooh, ooh
So you think you're lonely
Well my friend I'm lonely too
I want to get back to my City by the bay
Ooh, ooh
It's sad, oh there's been mornings out on the road without you,
Without your charms,
Ooh, my, my, my
[Chorus]
Feeling That Way
Opened my eyes to a new kind of way
All the good times that you saved
Are you feeling,
You feeling that way too
Or am I just,
Am I just a fool
When the summer's gone
She'll be there standing by the light
Once she's been to where she's gone to
She should know wrong from right
A new road's waiting, you touched my life
Soft and warm on a summer's night
You're the only one, the only one I love
The lovely one, I'm thinking of
Anytime
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you want me
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you want me
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you want me to
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you need me
I'm standing here with my arms a mile wide
Hoping and praying for you
Listen to me and enlighten me
I hope that you need me too, 'cause,
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you want me
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you want me
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you want me to
Ooh, ooh Anytime that you need me
Give me all of your sunshine
A spark is all I need
To take away, all of the shadows
Well what more can I say.
Anytime at all
Anytime at all
Anytime at all
La Do Da
Something about you baby
Really knocks me off my feet
Something about you sweetheart
Brings this poor boy to his knees
La, do, da, do, da
La, do, da, do, da, do, da
Something about you baby
Whey you touch me sweet so fine
I feel it, I feel it
When your body's close to mine
La, do, da, do, da
La, do, da, do, da, do, da
Patiently
Here I stand so patiently
For your lights to shine on me
For your song inside of me
This we bring to you
In the shadow of love
Time goes by leaving me helpless
Just to reach and try
To live my life
These are my reasons, so
here we stand so patiently
For your song inside of me
For your lights to shine on me
This we bring to you
One, One, in a million
Wheel in the Sky
Winter is here again oh Lord,
Haven't been home in a year or more
I hope she holds on a little longer
Sent a letter on a long summer day
Made of silver, not of clay
I've been runnin' down this dusty road
[Chorus:]
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'
I don't know where I'll be tomorrow
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'
I've been trying to make it home
Got to make it before too long
I can't take this very much longer
I'm stranded in the sleet and rain
Don't think I'm ever gonna make it home again
The mornin' sun is risin'
It's kissing the day
[Chorus]
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'
I don't know where I'll be tomorrow
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'
Somethin' to Hide
Please come talk to me
Tell me what's on your mind
You say there's nothin' wrong
I know
It's been a long long time
Since I last saw your face
Traces in my mind, I know
You've got somethin' to hide
That you're not telling me
You got somethin' to hide
And I know
Well there's something about you and I know
That you're not telling me
Winds of March
I covered you with roses
Like the stars at night
I covered you with love
Like a blanket on a cold winter's night
I covered you with joy
To make your lifetime big and bright
You touched me with your eyes
Soft as an evening breeze
You held me in your arms
As the winds rushed through the trees
You are my child
You make my lifetime big and bright
You are my child
You came like the winds of March
With all the love in your eyes
You are my child
You came like the morning lights
With all your love, in your eyes
You are my child
You came like the morning light
With all your love, in your eyes
Can Do
Did you ever stop to listen
To what you're missin', in the things you say
If you open up your eyes
than you'll realize, what I say
[Chorus:]
You can do what you want to
you can do if you try
You can do what you want to
You can do if you try
You take that golden rule
That you learned in school
And just throw it away
If you're well directed
Then you're protected, from the evil ways
[Chorus]
You can do what you want to
You can do if you try
Opened the Door
Girl, oh you came to me
Touched my life
Girl, how you sheltered me
Touched my life
It's the joy, you gave to me
When I was on my own, alone
Girl, your lips touching mine
Ooh so fine
Girl, softly touching me
Ooh so fine
She's the smile in my heart that sings
I's a song for you again
ooh, she opened up the door
She made my life once more
Yes she opened
Ooh, you opened up the door
Ya made my life once more
