Infiltration investigation!? At last it came a super-S-rank mission (Japanese: 潜入捜査!? 遂にきたきた超S級任務 - Sennyū sōsa!? Tsui ni kitakita chō-S-kyū ninmu) is episode 136 of the anime series Naruto. It marks the start of The Fillers.

[edit] Plot

At the Ichiraku ramen bar, Naruto apparently snuck out of the hospital just to eat ramen. Then the medical ninjas and Shizune find him and said that she thought that he got out of the hospital to train. Shizune ties him fully up in ropes and the medical ninjas drag him off with Shizune telling him that he can train later after he heals fully. Sakura remembers when she had begged Naruto to bring Sasuke back and stares at her reflection in the water. She thinks about how she had depended on Naruto to bring Sasuke back without actually doing anything.

Meanwhile Naruto, in his bed, still tied up by the ropes, has Shizune watching over him and Sakura comes in. Naruto tries to get up but Shizune screams at him telling him to stay in the hospital a little while longer and walks out of the door. As Sakura walks out Jiriaya comes in and starts eating Naruto's apples, saying that he heard from Shizune that he had ran away from the hospital. Naruto protests about him eating the apples and tells Jiraiya that he needs to do something. Jiraiya is skeptical; he knows that Sakura is determined to investigate the Village Hidden in Sound (with or without permission) and that Naruto is just as determined to go along with her.

Jiraiya goes to Tsunade's office and when Tsunade asks him if he was peeking at her, he retaliates by saying who would want to look at the old hag. Tsunade gets angry and Jiraiya hastily takes it back, afraid. He asks Tsunade if she can grant him a favor and Jiraiya convinces Tsunade to make Naruto & Sakura's disobedience into an official mission, with himself as team leader.

Back to the hospital, Naruto remembers when Sakura had told him she will work hard and thinks that she is also going after Sasuke. He quickly snaps his bonds (even the special ropes Shizune tied around his wrists) and gets out of bed. Meanwhile, Sakura is getting ready to leave when Naruto approaches her. Sakura says she thinks that she knows what he is thinking and asks whether he thinks she is holding everyone back. Naruto agrees to go with her and all of a sudden, Jiraiya appears and says that if they are caught outside the country borders they will be marked as fugitive ninjas and be caught and imprisoned. Jiraiya says however that he won't stop them, and in fact he will go along with them. We see Jiraiya's flashback of Tsunade letting him go. Tsunade says that the condition is that they all must come back alive, but is afraid that even if Jiraiya is with them it could still be too dangerous.

As they approach the village of the sound, Jiraiya explains to them the history of the Land of Rice Fields, now known as the Land of Sound. Naruto calls him a pervert that will look at girls mostly even when they go there. Jiraiya says out loud that he smells makeup powder then tells Naruto to give him all of his money. Sakura also offers her money as well and Jiraiya delightfully says that this is all that will be needed. Jiraiya follows the powder smell and comes to a cabin and opens the door. Jiraiya goes in and sees a bunch of sinister looking girls who start having sex with him. It apparently is another of those places where he just plays with girls.

Unfortunately, Team Jiraiya's first attempt at investigation comes to nothing. They do not encounter any ninjas, just irate bartenders who are trying to extort money from Jiraiya. The host presents the check and Jiraiya wonders why there are 3 more zeros then there should be and asks if he is already drunk. The host opens a door and out come a lot of tough looking fighters and the host tells him that if he wants to live, he has to take off everything he has.

Jiraiya laughs, figuring out what it is and while Naruto and Saukra wait for Jiraiya, commenting on how late he is. Someone from the bushes throws kunais at Naruto. Naruto dodges them and throws some of his own and out comes a masked girl. Naruto asks who she is and she throws a smoke bomb down. Naruto is about to step forward but Sakura warns him saying that there are caltrops there. Jiraiya calls their names and there is a mob behind him. Naruto wants to use his Shadow-Clone jutsu to defeat them, but Jiraiya confesses that he was at a bar. Sakura and Naruto are stunned and run for their lives, since they are not allowed to use ninja techniques against civilians. Sakura wonders if they will really reach Sasuke like this. Meanwhile the masked girl is running away from something.

[edit] Trivia

  • This is perhaps the only arc (filler or canon) in which Naruto does not wear his Hidden Leaf headband. This is likely because the team is on a secret infiltration mission, as mentioned by Jiraiya, and is further supported by the fact that Sakura is also not wearing her Leaf headband, but rather a plain ribbon with no metal plate. When not wearing the headband on his forehead, Naruto will occasionally wear it around his neck (like Hinata or Temari), but even then it is usually only for funerals. Jiraiya wears his usual headband, which has the kanji for "oil" on it instead of the Leaf symbol.
