Infernape (ゴウカザル Gōkazaru?, Goukazaru in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise. Infernape are famous for being the final form from one of the three species of Pokémon the player can choose at the start of their adventure in the Diamond and Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Infernape in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[1]

The name Infernape is a portmanteau of the words inferno and ape. The Japanese name Goukazaru is a portmanteau of the Japanese words for hell-fire (業火 gōka?) and monkey ( saru?). The pronunciation of zaru instead of the standard saru is a phonetic shift made when "saru" is used in a compound. Its name and appearance may also be a reference to Son Goku.

Biological characteristics

Its body is a brownish-red color and it has a large flame on its head; this flame burns throughout Infernape's entire life. The tail flame it had as a Monferno has disappeared. Infernape wears a gold chest ring in place of a chest plate. It also has gold shoulder pads, knee pads and wrist bands. The blue and red markings it had on its forehead as a Monferno have now changed to a deep blood-red color. Its hands, feet, and inner ears are blue. It uses its hands and feet to pull off special fighting attacks. It is most competitive when it comes to speed. It is the shortest fully-evolved main series starter Pokémon to date, being only three feet and eleven inches tall.

Overall, Infernape is a tribute to the legendary Chinese protagonist Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, of Journey to the West, minus the staff and riding cloud. Infernape may also be a bit based on Hanuman the Monkey God of Hindu mythology. It is based on the real-life baboon.

In the video games

Infernape makes its first appearance in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS along with many other Pokémon. Infernape is one of only four Pokémon with the type combination of Fire and Fighting, the others being Monferno, Combusken and Blaziken.

Infernape can only be obtained by evolving Monferno at level 36. Infernape is very strong in terms of offensive power, having very high Attack and Special Attack stats, as well as an even higher Speed stat, which is its greatest asset. These aspects make Infernape a quick and adaptive sweeper. However, Infernape's Defense and Special Defense are merely average and it suffers from low hit points.

Infernape is used by the third member of the Sinnoh Elite Four, Oba, at Level 61, making it Oba's strongest Pokémon.

If Infernape has a high happiness rating, a Move Tutor in Sinnoh will offer to teach it the move Blast Burn, an exclusive move shared with Charizard, Typhlosion, and Blaziken.
