[edit] Colours
Where the same colour has been allocated to more than one party this indicates that the groups are related to one another (either in organisational or political terms) and are believed to have either contested elections in different periods or different geographical areas.
The use of Tory and Whig up to 1832 and Conservative and Liberal from 1832, is a convention. It disguises a much more complex picture. Some politicians used the new terms in the 1830s but many did not for another generation.
[edit] A proposal for independent candidates
For other colouring proposals, see the talk page.
It is suggested that for Independents of various kinds, to whom no specific colour has been allocated, 'white' should be used - see the entry for Independent (political) below. An alternative is to use the background grey (by deleting the words 'with party link' from the heading for that particular box in the election result. A third alternative, if there is more than one group of Independents competing, is to use 'silver' - see the entry for Slough Independents below.
Local Residents and Ratepayers type groups, such as Independent Britwellian Residents and similar ward based organisations mentioned below, can all use 'pink' although meta/color and meta/shortname templates will have to be set up for each individual one.
