Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is a public university established in 1985 by an act of the Indian Parliament [1] (Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985) to provide access to quality higher education through distance learning to remote and disadvantaged students. It helps in democratization of education in India. The university has been mandated to maintain the standard of distance learning in the country. It provides distance learning in a variety of disciplines including computer science, engineering, health sciences, law, humanities, social sciences, and agriculture. Today it serves about 1.5 million students in India and 35 countries abroad. IGNOU has 11 Schools and a network of 58 regional centres, 7 sub-regional centres, 1400 study centres, and 41 overseas centres. About 10% of all students enrolled in higher education in India are enrolled with IGNOU. Apart from teaching and research, extension and training form the mainstay of its academic activities. It also acts as a national resource centre, and more importantly, promotes and maintains standards of distance education. The Commonwealth of Learning has recognised it as one of its centres of excellence. IGNOU hosts the Secretariats of the SAARC Consortium of Open Distance Learning (SACODiL) and the Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET) initially promoted by UNESCO.
IGNOU offers certificate, diploma, graduate, post-graduate, and Ph.D. distance education courses. Its regional centres include Indian air force, army, and navy recognized centres.
IGNOU was the first university in India to provide its students with a virtual campus. Students. The university is named after two-time Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi and is the world's largest university [2].
