Indiana State Police

The Indiana State Police is the state police agency for Indiana, which has jurisdiction anywhere in the state. It was created to protect the lives, property and constitutional rights of people in Indiana. Formed in 1933, it was the 12th state then to offer state police protection.

The Indiana State Police separates the state into 18 separate districts, and 3 divisions. [1]

The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for investigating major crimes, conducting specialized investigations, and providing investigative support. It's personnel also assist local, state and federal agencies with investigations into homicide, robbery, sex crimes and political corruption. Detectives are assigned to each district, the North Criminal Operations have 2 regional offices, one in Lowell and in Fort Wayne. The South Criminal Operations have 3 three offices, located in Indianapolis, Evansville and Sellersburg. Also, four detectives are assigned to a Cold Case Team. This team's duties include reviewing, re-opening unsolved case files that have potential.

The Gaming Enforcement Division is responsible for investigative and enforcement arm of the Indiana Gaming Commission. The Indiana Gaming Commissions' primary mission is to monitor the gaming industry in the state of Indiana. The division is separated in to two units, the Background Investigative Unit, and the Riverboat Investigative Unit. The Background Investigative Unit is responsible for background investigations of owners, management, employees, suppliers of equipment, and riverboat license applicants/holders. This unit also conducts detailed long-term gambling studies. The Riverboat Investigative Unit is staffed with detectives and supervisory personnel who make up the enforcement side of the Indiana Gaming Commission. The Riverboat Investigative Unit's are usually assigned 8 detectives and a squad sergeant per riverboat.

The Laboratory Division provides scientific analysis, collection of evidence and secure evidence storage/control in the four labs within the state of Indiana. The division is compliant with the standards of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board. Laboratory offices are located in Indianapolis, Lowell, Fort Wayne and Evansville. Almost 80 percent of analytical services and 55 percent of field services are in support of county and municipal police agency investigations.
