Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures was a game based on the Indiana Jones trilogy released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Factor 5 and published by JVC Musical Industries, Inc. The story was told through cut-scenes and text and was mostly faithful to the movies. Its release also coincided with the release of Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, also released by JVC and LucasArts.

[edit] Gameplay

The game was primarily action based and the player would control Indy going through levels based off events of the movies. Indy's main method of attack was his bull-whip, but he could also damage enemies by punching or rolling into them. Occasionally a gun would be found that had unlimited ammo, and grenades were available in limited amounts. Besides attacking, the whip could also be used as a method of swinging across pits. Once in a while, the game would break the mold from the typical action and plunge the player into various other types of gameplay, such as flying a plane, riding a mine cart, and going down a mountain on a raft.

[edit] Levels

Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures was a game with an engine similar to the Super Star Wars series that was broken into 28 areas, many of them in side-scrolling view, and others in driving stages.

  • Level 1: Chachapoyan Temple
  • Level 2: Boulder chase
  • Level 3: Snow Level
  • Level 4: Raven Bar
  • Level 5: Streets of Cairo
  • Level 6: Streets of Cairo 2
  • Level 7: Streets of Cairo 3
  • Level 8: German dig site

  • Level 10: Well of the Souls 2
  • Level 11: Island Surface
  • Level 12: The opening of the Ark
  • Level 13: Club Obi-Wan
  • Level 14: Shanghai streets
  • Level 15: Rafting in the snow
  • Level 16: Pankot Palace

  • Level 28: Grail room

All three of the movies were featured in the game, but Raiders of the Lost Ark is the only one playable upon starting the game. In order to play the Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade you had to progress through the game or use a password. The password system bypassed conventional lettering, opting instead to use the Greek alphabet. Like the Super Star Wars series, Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures is still regarded as an extremely challenging game to complete. Many levels are often quite long and include several enemies of all type, in some levels you have to fight with a villain from the movie in that you are playing. While the stages from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade are of moderate difficulty and some levels from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (such as the Pankot caves) bring with them a very high level of difficulty and a big amount of traps and enemies.

Perhaps the most difficult stages in the game are the driving stages. The snowraft and mine car chase from Temple of Doom, and the biplane dogfight from Last Crusade, where the player has to avoid certain traps and enemies. If the player is defeated in these stages, you have to restart the entire level. Also if the player loses all of their lives in some area (for example Cairo in Raiders of the Lost Ark), the player is forced to start all the stages of the area in which the player was defeated.

[edit] Reception

The game was fairly well received by critics and fans alike. All Game praises the game's simple, but effective gameplay and controls and faithfulness to the source material. The game's graphics and music are also generally regarded positively (with music taken from John Williams's compositions of the films). In the negative side, a common complaint about the music is the small number of songs present in the game (many of them taken from Raiders, one from Temple of Doom, and none taken from Last Crusade).

[edit] Trivia

  • In the second level from Temple of Doom (Shanghai streets) there is a sign that says "C'boath Bar". This is a reference to the Star Wars character Joruus C'Baoth.
  • The sprite of Indy in the game is depicted as a complete head swap of Han Solo's sprite of Super Return of the Jedi, although with the aspect and abilities of Indiana Jones. This is a reference to the fact not only that the same actor, Harrison Ford, played both characters, but also that both this game and the Super Star Wars series have similar gameplay and that Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures was released the same year that Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
