[edit] History
After the enactment of Indian Mines Act of 1901, need for a government college of Mining Engineering was felt by the Indian Government. The Indian National Congress in its Calcutta session of 1901 also endorsed this idea. A committee of experts under the chairmanship of MacPherson, then Chief Secretary of Bihar and Orissa was formed to study the system of mining education in Europe, especially England. On basis of the report of the committee, in 1920, Indian Government decided to establish an All India Institution, fully funded by Central Government to be setup in Dhanbad.
Indian School of Mines University was set up by the government of India and formally opened by His Excellency the Viceroy of India Lord Irwin on 9th December 1926 as the first Mineral Technology Institute in the country on the model of the Royal School of Mines. The Indian School of Mines (ISM) is the only institute of its kind in India and holds the privilege of being an Institute of National Importance in India. From the very day of its inception, ISM has had an All India character and outlook.
The institute initially offered courses in Mining Engineering and Applied Geology and was known as Indian School of Mines & Applied Geology. In 1957 the institute began offering additional courses such as Petroleum Engineering and Applied Geophysics. The institute was granted university status in 1967. Later courses in Mining Machinery Engineering and [Mineral Engineering] were started in 1975 and 1983.
In 1997 the institute began admitting students through the Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology, the Institute of Technology - BHU and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. In 1998 courses for Electronics Engineering and Computer Science were introduced and in 1999 Mechanical Engineering.
In 2006 ISM started to offer as many as 14 new courses, prominent being Electrical Engineering and a unique course in Environmental Engineering in undergraduate curriculum. ISM also started integrated Graduate engineering and management courses in Mining, Mineral and Petroleum engineering, anticipating a growing need for such graduates. This was the first such course offering by any technical institution in India.
ISM is rapidly expanding and is in the process of acquiring new land adjacent to the present campus, which will nearly double the size of the existing one.ISM is also rapidly improving its position among top engineering colleges of India.
In a recent survey by Outlook India (June 2006), it ranked 12th among top 100 engineering colleges of India.
